Let’s be real—it’s easy to feel the pressure when everyone on social media is posting pictures of expensive gifts and grand gestures. But, I’m sure as you know, love isn’t measured by how much you spend. If anything, those thoughtful little things often end up meaning even more. When you’re working toward financial goals together, staying budget-friendly just makes sense!
My boyfriend and I have figured out that we’re not about the flashy stuff and honestly, we are both terrible gift givers. Changing our money mindset like I talk about in my article Mastering Your Money Mindset: Transform Habits and Boost Your Wallet can help you get there, too.

I tend to lean toward experiences or small, meaningful gifts—things that say, “I know you” or “I’ve been thinking about you.” Honestly, it’s a relief! No pressure to overspend, no awkward “oops, my gift was way more expensive than yours” moments. It’s just about showing up for each other in ways that feel real.
So, if you’re like me and want to make your partner feel truly special without emptying your wallet, this list is for you. Whether it’s their birthday, Valentine’s Day, or just because, here’s your chance to show some extra love without stressing your budget.
For your Partner
When you’re picking a gift for your partner, think about what makes them light up. Is it quality time? A sweet surprise? A gesture that shows you really get them? There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to love, so feel free to put your own spin on these ideas. Sometimes, the simplest gestures have the most impact—and those are the moments you’ll both treasure.
Write a Love Letter
A heartfelt, handwritten letter can be incredibly romantic and personal. Share your favorite memories, what you admire about them, and your hopes for the future. Add little illustrations or tuck it into a book they love for a sweet surprise. This is super easy to add on to any size gift, and it will likely be the most meaningful. It can be pulled out and read over and over again, forever.

DIY Photo Album or Scrapbook
Gather your favorite photos and create a keepsake they can cherish. If you like crafts: add captions, doodles, or little notes to make it even more meaningful. If you’re short on supplies or like the simple things, even a simple folded booklet can work wonders! Maybe do one each year with your favorite memories, milestones, or each month in picture. Make it your own!
Gift a Potted Plant (My favorite to receive!)
A small plant or succulent is a gift that grows over time, just like your relationship. Consider one with a symbolic meaning, like a peace lily for harmony or a lucky bamboo for prosperity.
My boyfriend gifted me a potted plant with pink flowers for Valentine’s Day two years ago, and I keep it on my work desk and remember that every time I look at it. The gift that keeps on giving.

Cook Their Favorite Meal
Skip the fancy restaurant and bring date night home. Recreate their favorite dish, light some candles, and enjoy a cozy meal together. Bonus points for a handwritten menu to make it extra special.
If they are the primary cook, this is such a great gift! It is so nice to have a day off of cooking and enjoy one of your partner’s favorite recipes.
Plan a Thoughtful Date
Organize a special outing that aligns with their interests. Whether it’s a hike, a picnic in the park, or a DIY wine-and-paint night at home, the effort will stand out more than the price tag.
An idea from my therapist: plan the date YOU would like to go on and have your partner plan one that THEY want to go on. You will get a glimpse into their interests and them into yours. This is a great way to both have the date you like, but include your partner on something you’ve been asking them to participate in.
Make a Playlist
Curate a collection of songs that remind you of them or your relationship. You can add notes about why each song is special and share it digitally—or go old-school with a burned CD!

Create a ‘Reasons I Love You’ Jar
Fill a jar with small notes listing the reasons you love them, memories you’ve made and love, or affirmations. They can pull one out whenever they need a pick-me-up. Use colorful paper or personalize it with decorations for an extra touch. This is such small physical effort, but plan in advance because thinking of all of these can take a bit to fill out depending on how many you make.
DIY Coupon Book (My favorite to receive!)
Offer personalized coupons for things like a free back rub, a chore of their choice, or a no-questions-asked movie night pick. This is a fun way to give them little moments of care and consideration over time.
This is great for a book of ideas where you think you can step up in your relationship (there’s always room for growth!) I know I am awful at folding laundry and my boyfriend ALWAYS does it. One of my coupons may include folding laundry for a week to relieve him of his monotonous chore.
Tip: If you are in a creative rut, you can likely find templates and ideas for these gifts on Etsy to support small businesses and get quick access to a printable.
